Outlander is the first in a series of eight historical multi-genre novels by Diana Gabaldon. Published in 1991, it focuses on the Second World War–era nurse Claire Randall, who travels through time to 18th century Scotland and finds adventure and romance with the dashing Jamie Fraser. A mix of several genres, the Outlander series has elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and science fiction/fantasy. Outlander won the Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Romance of 1991. A television adaptation of the Outlander series premiered on Starz in the US on August 9, 2014. See the sights in this area of Scotland that inspired the Diana Gabaldon's romantic historical fiction Outlander series. Diana combined the real events around the 1745 Jacobite Rising with fictional characters to produce a series of books that has captured the world.
This tour is called the Outlander Plus as it visits places that either inspired Diana or were the actual events and places mentioned in the books as well as a few other places that are close to where we are on the tour. Go and see the real places, backed up with quotes from the books. Please be aware that in the TV series some things were changed by the production team and these will differ to the book and we will point out these differences. They affect those places marked ^.
We will pick you up from your place of residence or from the port at Invergordon if you are arriving on a cruise ship. First stop is Inverness City Centre, then off to Culloden Battlefied, Clava Cairns^, Fort George*^, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle*, Beaufort Castle*, Wardlaw Mausoleum, Beauly Priory and Castle Leod*^.
